Back to Reality

I love soapstone. I really do. But, the fact of the matter is that I don't think it is a wise investment for this house. This is not our "forever home" and we don't think we'll be staying here for five more years even. Ideally, we would buy something larger (DC Rowhouse is a 2 bedroom and the 2nd is pretty small) and rent this place out. This may be a pipe dream.

I'm keeping the soapstone in mind for when I have a kitchen with beautiful handcrafted cabinets in a house I plan on staying for a very long time.

For now, I'm thinking that the black granite is gonna work just great.

I would have loved soapstone, or marble slab but . . . at $300 a running foot installed -- I chose white marble tile -- at $20 a foot installed! This IS our forever house but I still couldn't justify the cost . . . . And if I get tired of the marble tile, I can replace it without batting an eye -- if I had gotten tired of the other -- I would have to live with it until I die! I dream big but in reality, I am a much more saner person!

Martha,

Boy, do I know what you are talking about. It's fun to pic out all the wonderful pieces. Then, you have to really think about what your doing, cry a little bit, and go with the logical answer.

I'm with you. Nothing works like working within a sane budget.

Frankly, it makes decision making easier and morally unambiguous. ;)

One goofy thought: Have you considered cement? You can do some pretty sexy stuff with it, and frankly, you can get it to look much like soapstone.

You can even do it yourself (not that we have--we like nice, soft wood, as do our wine glasses).

Mark,

I did think of cement, until I saw some home show where this couple tried to do it themselves. They messed it up pretty bad and had to call in a professional who cost them a pretty penny. That was a little bit of a deterrent.
