My heart on a ... shelf

The kitchen renovation process has been going slow. I mean, really slow, like stagnant. Part of it is the cost. It's not like we can't do it. It's just . . . should we do it? The economy is weak and the housing prices are crashing to the ground like a fat kid playing king of the hill.

Meanwhile, the dishwasher is as loud as a banker's private jet flying into D.C. to ask for more money, the fridge has water pooling at the bottom which occasionally graces us with it's presence and leaks out the side, and the stove is one huge shit show. Not to mention that the microwave started shooting sparks while I was cooking New Year's Eve dinner. But, I fixed that - thank god. Have you recently lived your life without a microwave. It really makes you appreciate it a lot more.

Now, one part of what is making the kitchen so expensive is the cabinets and the fact that we want a lot of them. Our ceiling is 107 inches from the floor, therefore if we want cabinets to go to the ceiling, we need to double-stack. Caaaa....ching. The problem is that our kitchen is small, our house is small and we need all the storage we can get. The other pickle I am in is that while I like to have things accessible to me, I also like a clean and clear countertop.

You can imagine my glee when I saw this:

Isn't it amazing?! What a great idea. Check out more of the pictures here.

i hate upper cabinets with a passion and love the open shelves. I would even just to two levels of shelves and scrap the uppers all together. you can always add them later

Open shelving in my house = kitties play area. When Dylan was a kitten he would open the kitchen cabinets and lay among the glasses. So bad! So if we had all open shelves our dinnerware would be in piles on the floor.

What a great solution to have upper cabinets with a shelf. It should save you in cost, but also allow you to display items without them cluttering up the counter tops. I'm like you, I like a clean counter top.
