Cat Blogging: Dylan on a diet

We have two cats here at DC Rowhouse. Dylan and Nina. Let me introduce you.

Nina is a gray and white house cat, she likes canned tuna, sinks . . .

and baskets:

Then, there's Dylan. He is a black and white house cat. He likes head rubs, garbage bags of clothes:

And, food . . . especially if it belongs to someone else:

Ah, Dylan . . . he's a portly fella. He weighs in at a whopping 24.5 lbs. That's not a typo. TWENTY FOUR (and a half) POUNDS! He's like a dog. Not even a small dog. Nina, weighs 9 lbs. or less. Here they are in a basket together:

Precious, right? They're in love. Well, you can see one of them has an advantage as far as size. Sometimes Dylan likes to use Nina as his pillow (as you can see in this fuzzy photo):

So, what to do. It's diet time. His goal is to lose about 8-9 pounds. Let me tell you, he is not looking forward to it. He stuck up his nose at the "special" food for days (alright, maybe hours). . . until that pesky hunger of his got the better of him. Can he do it? Stay tuned. . .

We too have an enormous black and white cat:

I have a theory, as these types of cats are often overweight, even in households with other normal size cats. I think their metabolisms are extremely sluggish, maybe their coloration makes them lousy hunters. I imagine a black and white cat having a hard time securing a meal in the wild. I got nothing to base it on - just my own musings.

Good luck with the diet plans. We got ours down from 28 pounds to 24 but couldn't get her any lower. The lengths we went to to keep food away from her while providing sustenance to our other pets just became too ridiculous to keep up. So the little fatty won.

Anon,

I laughed for a long time at that photo. Good stuff. I wish your cat and Dylan could meet and start their own cat style sumo wrestling league.

I'm a glowing, proud Aunt. Love those snugglers -- chunk or no chunk -- love 'em!

I wish I had a photo to share with you of my formerly 22-pounder (her fighting weight, we called it)... in my defense, she was 16 pounds or so when I got her so her former owner had already set the stage. Priscilla, Queen of the Jungle, we called her -- and she was a black/gray/white striped tabbyish cat, too. Maybe it is the coloring?

Miss that cat every day; what a lover she was.....

Stash,

I know. I'm not making any promises, but the big reveal should be in the next two weeks.
