Chicks in the City?

We all know of the recent "movement" towards growing food at home. It's economically and ecologically responsible, and it can be pretty fun too. I can't wait to expand the small patch at DC Rowhouse into a more versatille garden. Eventually, we'll leave DC Rowhouse and head to a place where we can have a larger patch of earth to grow food and maybe even get a barnyard pet or two. . . or six. According to the washingtonpost, chickens are the new fad and people are raising them in thier small urban yards.

If I had to choose, I would get the Araucana Chickens:

Why? Because they lay colored eggs of course:

I'd like to get a couple chickens, too. I was pleasantly surprised when I found that the fanciest breeds generally cost about $20 at the most (for day or two old chicks), and that most were much less.

There's one other bonus to non-factory eggs that most people don't mention - thicker shells. It's a lot easier to crack the eggs into a frying pan without getting bits of shell in there.

While we have the space to make it work, we're cautious about bringing any more animals into our household. We like to travel and we already have three turtles and a cat. I can't imagine asking someone else to take care of all that and a couple chickens.

My solution was a nice chicken dinner before going on vacation. A. was less than pleased with this idea.

Christopher,

Well, since DC does not allow chickens - it's out of the question for me right now. But, I agree on the vacation aspect. Who's going to care for all of that? Yikes!

Who's going to pick up all the chicken poo and little to the clucking? I mean, really. Dylan and Neens would not be happy.

K,

Dylan and Neens would be upset! They would be cackling at them all day!

I live in a house in g-town that was built a few years after yours. One day my dogs and I wandered into glover-park... I SWEAR there were chickens in the back yard my dogs tried to jump into.

I have never been able to find that house again, the mythical chicken house. Confirmed. By you.

Not that I was looking, but you can buy incubators and eggs on ebay. I like ducklings, OK?
